Much more first teamers this week - first sighting of EVR!

Tigers looking very strong, doubt that's much different to the team they'll put out in the first few rounds of the Prem

Interesting teams, a good test for us as I agree, that’s a pretty full strength tigers team and we have maybe 3 first team starters

Think I'll skip it again, as with the first game. Isn't it time we just killed the Prem Cup off?
So where do you blood the younger players? Or those players in need of game time following injury? The new set up with Championship teams as well is brilliant in my opinion.

I feel the exact opposite to you. I think it is a necessity in the English game given the competitiveness of our league and the need to have good squad depth.

Any news on Raffi?

I note (credit Kieran) Axe's comments on 5 Sept that he was back in training and, depending on how he reacted, he would be up for selection. 2 squads so far and no raffi. Hope it's tactical and not a stupid niggling injury.

Not seen any updates, but if I were picking the team I'd start bringing him back in next week
Think there's 5 rounds of Prem cup before the Prem Proper starts
1: Thomas/Wootton
2: Thomas/Wootton
3: Quirke/Thomas
4: Quirke/Warr
5: Warr/Quirke
Would get everyone a good chunk of game time before we go into the season

Sounds like the scrum is going very well - obviously we know how good SiMac is there, but it's a great to see(/hear) the partnership with Harper working

Sounds like the benches are telling,
Tigers now 7 - 18 up with Pollard on

I'm happy enough with that considering the comparative strength of the two sides

Sounds like the first half was essentially 40mins of alternating scrums and lineouts

Just on way home, am happy considering the side tigers put out. Van ryne is a certainly a big lad

The first half felt one of the most painful I’ve endured. To our credit, we didn’t give Tigers a sniff which is impressive given their lineup. I hadn’t seen it beforehand and when the teams announced, felt a bit queasy for our prospects. However, the number of times we coughed the ball up was horrendous, while the lineout, oh the lineout. Same failings as against Bedford and twice inside 17 mins we had good attacking positions ruined by a ball sailing high and long over everyone. I don’t know who was calling them but they weren’t even close and across two games, it’s criminal for it to keep happening. It was no surprise to see Beau doing a thorough warm up at half time and be introduced shortly thereafter.

Then came the second half and the inevitable happened - as soon as that Tigers back line was given an attacking platform deep in our half, its quality paid off.

For those at the game with more understanding than me, what was the argument for Tempest not awarding us a penalty try late on? I thought it’d be a yellow for Pollard and the penalty try, given how close to the in goal area the offence took place and that he wiped out our player with no other covering defender in sight as I recall? It mightn’t have made a difference, then again the extra two minutes might’ve given us a shot at another score.

I noticed on twitter that Veainu went off relatively early - do you know if that was an injury?

I would say that it wasn't a probable try. For me, there was sufficient doubt that he would have caught up with the ball to ground it before it went dead.

His knee was pretty heavily strapped I think at start. He received treatment prior for something leg related, then had to be replaced not long after

Concerning - hopefully just a precaution after so long out

Agreed, he didn't seem as 'steppy' as he was in the past but I guess may not have had much opportunity

The first half "highlights" were pretty accurate - there weren't any. Basically it consisted of knock-on, scrum, reset scrum, and repeat, interspersed with over-thrown line-outs. I think you've got to point the finger at the hooker - the jumpers weren't going to get to them in any event. Hopefully Creevy can help there.

Re Veainu, it was his ankle. He had heavy strapping and ice pack on at half time and was limping quite badly at the end, though was walking without help or the strapping.
The Pollard yellow was still a bit of a distance out (about 10 metres I think) and it looked to me that there were some Leicester players tracking across to cover, so think the decision was correct - yellow but no PT.
Overall there were some really good performances that bear well for the future. For me Curtis, Ene and Woodward were exceptional , with none of the youngsters letting the side down.

Should have checked the video before my comment re yellow and PT, though still think the decision was correct but for different reasons. The Sale player (couldn’t see who it was) kicked through just before the tackle came in, but the ball was heading out of play and was never going to be reached even if Pollard hadn’t made the illegal tackle.

Did you mean Tristan Woodman? If so, I agree, although he's got some pretty strong competition for the number 7 shirt. Keeping him could be tricky.

Ene looked good, second game on the bounce and he’s got definite potential. Woodman already with the U-20 England setup and I’d imagine he’s one of the players the club are budgeting for salary increases in coming years. He’s in a very good place to learn from the Curry twins and their international involvement over the next few years should give him plenty of opportunities to gain League experience and if the rumours are true, he’ll have a higher threshold than Dugdale. These run outs will benefit him - some good turnovers and lively around the park, also guilty of conceding the penalty just after we’d scored our first try to get into the lead, from which the Tigers backs got their first chance to move off an attacking platform deep in our half and from which the inevitable happened. That may sound curmudgeonly however it’s not intended to be, he’s not the first and won’t be the last to give away a penalty in the wrong part of the field!

One thing I couldn’t understand - why Sam James was never used to kick for touch when his left-footed angle would’ve added distance.

Watched the game via PRTV

Not much to write home about really. Backs barely had an impact - mainly forwards running into eachother and then losing it in contact - lots of scrums.

It's quite annoying our achilles heel of the lineout remains to blight us. I thought Thomas looked very bright at 9 - some of the passing wasn't great when the backs did see a bit of ball. Tackling for one of their tries was a bit powder puff

New SA lad looks a beast. I did like seeing whoever played 6 with the same colour cap as Langdon - though it then made me miss the fact he's gone.

Curtis has a lovely zippy pass but as I started with - the backs barely got into it. Good performance against a stronger Leics team - one for the purists....
