I don’t think that any referee is conciously biased but they are human. Rugby, is possibly more than any other sport, open to interpretation from a refereeing perspective. At most breakdowns and almost every scrum there are multiple offences being committed. A referee can be lenient or not. We all know that sides are constantly marginally offside. That lineouts are not straight is a given but how much squint is interpreted by the officials. Hopefully over a match and certainly over a season, things even themselves out. The problem is that referees enter games with preconceived ideas about players deficiencies and irritations. They are human and not machines. They are influenced by home crowds, the scrutiny of television and their own fame and persona. Jono would get on my tits if I was a referee and I would be keen to make a point. His interaction with officials is a negative for Sale. We all know it and Dimes needs to sort it out.

Thanks Major a great read as always.
The first sentence probably sums up virtually every Sale fans thoughts?
However a pleasant change to get the win first game up.

Fair points on the ref. The frustration for me was that the reffing of the breakdown was totally different to post-lockdown. Much as we didn’t adapt in the first game back v Quins, we didn’t in this one either.

We got frustrated that we couldn’t compete for the ball and that led to a lot of the pens and consequently the backchat.

On the money as usual Major.

Not sure why Tempo has become such an issue this week. I thought he had a decent game, yes, as usual, a handful of decisions I thought he got wrong and I will be right with a few of them but I got no sense of unevenness with his decisions. I was actually impressed that another ref, other than Maxwell House was pinging attackers for off feet at the ruck. If more of them continue to do it we have a fighting chance when we play Exeter.

Except he wasn’t pinging Saints for it?? That was my main complaint.

But he did several times, he may have missed several others, but he likely missed us doing it too. Don't forget they still have their old favourite 'go-to' - Material Effect.

I suppose my point is really that, if we are getting the rough end of the stick from the ref, it's probably because we've pissed him off, or because a player has a (deserved) reputation. It's not because he's agin us for personal reasons: it's entirely our fault.

I think you are spot on. What is frustrating is that this is largely solvable. Dimes of course has been a problem himself as far as reputation with the referees is concerned. I’m not sure I can imagine him taking a tough line with Jono over this. How can Dimes lay down the law about not disrespecting the referee when he thinks a number of them are useless?
