Why did they never want to sell?

I think people often think of the stadium as just that. The joint venture between Salford Council and Peel also own all the land around the stadium. Indeed part of the extra money provided was to purchase the waste company site ( opposite the Barley Farm)

The council and Peel have always talked about the stadium as "part" of a long term project, which eventually will pay for itself.

I have no doubt that while the council would sell the stadium tomorrow, Peel are under no short term pressures. They both believe in the longer term the stadium and surrounding plots is worth more than anyone is currently willing to pay.

I guess that if someone offered the council their investment back they would happily sell, I doubt that Peel would be happy with that return.
